THE GREEKS OF MADAN

PART 2   PART 1

By Arman Hakobyan-Emofromidis

This article is about the Armenian Greeks who mostly live in the northern part of Armenia, and is a continuation of Part 1 . The presence of Greek settlements in Armenia is widely evident. The Greek villages were mostly concentrated around industrial towns and they played an important role not only in their respective communities, but also in developing the region as a whole. The Greek village of Madan is interesting on a research perspective due to its geographic location and historic past.

Madan's Greek population was always sizeable compared to other Greek villages in Armenia. This changed after the collapse of the Soviet Union when families from Madan began moving to Greece. Historically, the village was divided into quarters, such as Chakhmakhand, Patmanand, Panikovand, Ekipera etc.

The 1989 population census showed 363 households in Madan
