About us

PontosWorld is a bilingual website created in 2005 to provide information about the region of northeastern Turkey known historically as Pontus. The initial aim of the website was to publish information mainly in English which at the time was lacking on the internet.  Due to popular demand (from Greece in particular) the website now publishes material in Greek also.

The website was created in 2005 as a public forum and within 12 months its popularity grew enormously. Today over 1700 members are registered in our forum and a total of 41,000 posts have been published.  The focal point of the site however is the front page which has over 1000 articles published and is visited by over 600 people worldwide each day. The front page has seen an increase in popularity from day 1 and continues to grow. Added to this is our facebook page which has over 4600 followers.

Apart from educating and informing people on new and interesting things related to Pontus and Pontian culture from around the world, the site aims to bring Greeks and Turks together to help them understand that their cultures are in many ways similar. Through a realisation that they share a common past, we believe the reconciliation process can begin, and that Greeks and Turks will be able to coexist again in the future.  In many ways the process has begun.

Operating out of Melbourne, Australia the site owes alot to the contributors of the website. Since its inception the site has received requests from; authors, historians. artists, poets, genocide scholars, musicians, politicians, TV and radio broadcasters and the general public. It's this interest from a vast cross section of the people that keeps the site going
