The Serra is a Pyrrhic (warlike) dance which is commonly danced by Pontian Greeks. It's name is derived from the river Serra which is in close proximity to Trapezounta (Pontos). The dance is described by Xenophon in the 4th century BC and consists of 2 men fighting with knives in circle formation with a lyra playing. The 2 dancers struggle for victory, one dancer eventually stabbing the other leading to his perceived/mock death. The victor then dances around the fallen dancer but eventually kneels down beside him and continues to stab himself as the grief of his opponent's death sets in. The 2 then rise to the amazement of a surrounding audience and continue the dance.
