The Acritaeon (Gr: Ακριταίον) hospital in Trabzon (formerly Trebizond) was built in the early 20th century by wealthy Greek businesman Panagiotis Akritas, a major benefactor of Trabzon. He was originally from Lykast in Kromni (today Krom) but acquired immense wealth in commerce and trade activities while in Russia. The Akritas family was a branch of the well known Akritidis family, many of whom excelled in trade and commerce and contributed to the Greek community of Trabzon.
According to a booklet published in 1909 which listed all the rules of the hospital, Akritas gifted the hospital exclusively for the use of the Greek Orthodox community of Trabzon under an Ottoman firman (decree) dated 1323. Wealthy patients were required to pay while the disabled were given free medical treatment. The building was destroyed by fire in 1970.
